Who We Are

BMAC helps low-income people in our community to become self-sufficient by offering services to get them out of the cycle of poverty. Our programs include:

 

FOOD

Food Bank - Collecting and storing food for distribution at local pantries and public food distributions.

Walla Walla Community Harvest - Gardening to provide fresh produce to feed the hungry via the BMAC Food Bank and partnering pantries, and partnering with Whitman Glean Team to glean fresh produce from local farmers for the food bank.

Washington State Basic Food - Providing financial assistance for groceries, formerly referred to as food stamps.

 

HOUSING

Affordable Housing Rentals - Rental housing units for low-income seniors, disabled adults, and chronically mentally ill tenants.

Lead-based Paint Removal - Providing inspections, assessments, and removal of lead-based paint hazards in homes.

Permanent Supportive Housing - Providing permanent housing and case management for homeless families with children.

Transitional Housing for Homeless - Providing rent assistance and case management for homeless families.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families - Rapidly rehousing homeless veterans and those at risk of becoming homeless, as well as offering case management and referrals to other resources.

 

EDUCATION/EMPLOYMENT

Adult Literacy Tutoring - Offering one-on-one tutoring from volunteer tutors in GED preparation, English speaking reading and writing, math, computers, and other skills.

Adult Job Training - Providing career training, assistance with résumés, and work experience with local businesses.

Youth Job Training - Providing local youth with opportunities to build their résumés and learn valuable work ethic and skills.

AmeriCorps - Offering 10.5 month positions in community service to local nonprofits and schools, promising valuable experience, a living stipend, benefits, and money for further education and/or past student loans.

Asset Building Coalition - Providing classes and workshops in financial literacy, including budgeting, credit, banking, and more.

 

ENERGY

Energy Assistance - Providing financial assistance with winter utility bills to low-income households.

Home Weatherization - Improving energy efficiency in homes and reducing costs of heating and cooling.

 

LEGAL AID/ADVOCACY

Pro Bono Legal Aid Referral - Connecting people to free legal aid for civil cases such as divorces and parenting plans.

Long Term Care Ombuds - Advocating for the rights of residents in long-term care facilities

COMMUNITY

Commitment to Community - A neighborhood revitalization initiative promoting civic engagement in low-income neighborhoods.

 

What We Do

Blue Mountain Action Council's mission is to cultivate innovative services, in partnership with our community, to emplower low-income people to meet their vital needs and achieve self-sufficiency.

Our vision

Blue Mountain Action Council (BMAC), one of a number of Community Action Programs in Washington State, is a private, nonprofit, multipurpose agency, serving residents in Southeastern Washington to:

  • meet the basic needs of low-income individuals and families
  • offer opportunities for individuals and families to achieve greater levels of strength, independence, and self-sufficiency
  • develop and implement strategies to prevent poverty in our communities, and
  • leverage community support, service, and volunteerism
