The Adult Literacy Program works with adults who want to learn to speak conversational English. Student skill levels range from little to no comprehension/speaking of English to students who simply need assistance practicing their English with a conversation partner.
Tutors working with students who have little to no English comprehesion/speaking skills, need to be conversational in Spanish. Tutors who serve as conversation partners do not need to speak Spanish.
Typically, students are paired one-on-one with a tutor, however, we may pair two students with a tutor if the students are at a similar level and the tutor agrees to work with two students. We ask students and tutors to commit to meeting twice each week for 60-minute sessions. Tutoring must take place in a public location. Meeting days, times and location are determined by mutual agreement of student(s) and tutor.
All tutors participate in a 3-hour general training with the program director. In additon, completing the online self-paced training modules for our ESL curriculum, Intercambio, is required of tutors using this curriculm. Tutors who volunteer as conversation partners are not required to complete the online training, but are welcome to do so if interested.
