A storm traveled from the west toward Wallowa on Aug. 11, with some hail reported as large as golf balls and even baseballs in certain areas of Wallowa County and winds up to 50 mph, according to media accounts.
While many community organizations have banded together, the northeast Oregon community of around 800 people does not have the financial resources to support repairs and recovery, Governor Brown said in a news release. The city of Wallowa is a small, remote rural community with many low-income community members that live on fixed incomes, and many are either uninsured or underinsured.
In efforts to support the community, Walla Walla's Center for Humanitarian Engagement and Blue Mountain Long-Term Recovery Group are hosting a community social and working on window installations. On Saturday Nov. 5, we will be preparing a meal, singing songs, and participating in activities with community members. We are anticipating anywhere from 200-500 guests, and could use all the help we can get! Please read the following event details below carefully.
Departure Sat Nov. 5
We will be departing from the SAC parking lot at 12:30pm and arriving in Wallowa at approximately 2:20pm (it's an approximately 2 hour drive). The rest of the evening will consist of meeting with the mayor, dinner prep, windows installation instruction/tutorial, and the community social itself. The social will run from 6-8pm with clean-up following shortly after.
Due to the snow and strong winds scheduled for Saturday we are asking that students plan on spending the night.
Lodging
If you'd like to spend the night in Wallowa there are sleeping accommodations available. Many members of the CHE team will be spending the night and participating in recovery efforts the following day, students are encouraged to join us for Sunday's projects.
Sunday Projects
The focus of Sunday will be to repair/insulate windows. Students are welcome to stay and help with these efforts but it does require a separate sign up. Please use this link to sign up if you'd like to help out with repair efforts on Sunday:
