Volunteer: Adult Literacy TutorsThe Adult Literacy Program helps adults to reach personal goals in improving their education, such as: Reading Writing English language GED testing preparation Citizenship testing preparation Computer skills CNA exam preparation and more!Students are paired one-on-one with a tutor. We ask students and tutors to commit to meeting twice each week for 60-minute sessions. Tutoring must take place in a public location. Meeting days, times and location are determined by mutual agreement of student and tutor. All tutors participate in a 3-hour general training with the program director. Student skill levels range from little to no comprehension/speaking of English to students who simply need assistance practicing their English with a conversation partner. Tutors working with students who have little to no English comprehesion/speaking skills, need to be conversational in Spanish. Tutors who serve as conversation partners do not need to speak Spanish. Typically, students are paired one-on-one with a tutor, however, we may pair two students with a tutor if the students are at a similar level and the tutor agrees to work with two students. We ask students and tutors to commit to meeting twice each week for 60-minute sessions. Tutoring must take place in a public location. Meeting days, times and location are determined by mutual agreement of student(s) and tutor. All tutors participate in a 3-hour general training with the program director. In additon, completing the online self-paced training modules for our ESL curriculum, Intercambio, is required of tutors using this curriculm. Volunteer: Long-Term Care OmbudsmanBMAC is once again the host of a new regional office for the Washington State Long-Term Care Ombuds Program (LTCOP). This program provides effective, visible advocacy for residents in long-term care facilities. A certified ombuds is a volunteer, observer, listener, detective, communicator, and problem-solver who advocates for residents in long-term care facilities. Each volunteer receives extensive free training and support. Our volunteers find that they enjoy knowing that their volunteer work makes a critical difference in the lives of vulnerable people. Volunteer Ombuds work to protect residents’ rights and dignity, ensure quality care, and prevent neglect, abuse, and other issues.
